An updated List of Introduced and Invasive Species for Belgium has been published

03.02.2026

Introduced and invasive species (IIS) have significant ecological and economic impacts, and contribute to global biodiversity change in a major way. Their management requires access to national lists of introduced and invasive species. These lists should be generated in a reproducible way, to keep them updated every time a new species is introduced.

The TriAS Project was the first project to introduce such a reproducible workflow to generate the Global Register for Introduced and Invasive Species in Belgium. This checklist was first introduced in 2019 and integrates twelve authoritative checklists defined by a specific taxonomic, geographic or thematic scope. The data is made interoperable and standardised through a repeatable workflow, and is then published as open datasets to GBIF. The workflow implemented enhances the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability of introduced and invasive species data in Belgium, in line with the FAIR principles.

As the last update of GRIIS Belgium was in 2023, updating it was of fundamental importance to OneSTOP and included a revision of the entire workflow.

More information about the process of updating it is available as a published milestone in OneSTOP’s Library.  In the next steps, OneSTOP aims to extend this reproducible approach to generate and update national lists of IIS for Cyprus, Belgium, Portugal and Romania.
